Kudaka Island

At a glance

Kudaka Island is a long and narrow island situated to the south of the main island of Okinawa. The island is a mythical site where Amamikiyo, the Creator of the Ryukyu Islands, is said to have first landed and began building a nation. Kudaka Island is also known as the “Island of the Gods” because during the Ryukyu Kingdom the king would visit here every year to pay homage to the Creator. A gourd filled with grain seeds is said to have been brought here by the ocean, so the island is believed to be the birthplace of grain locally. Make your visit even more profound by studying about the island’s history and legends before you go.

The island can be reached from the main island of Okinawa in just 15 minutes by high-speed boat, making day trips a breeze and leaving ample time to tour the island on a rental bicycle. The island is dotted with many beaches along its coast, so visitors often come to look for a favorite spot in particular. In addition, visitors need to keep in mind that many places on the island are off limits to outsiders because they are reserved for traditional rituals and events.

The island’s local specialty is Irabu-jiru (a soup featuring black-banded sea krait), which is rich and savory. This dish contains main important nutrient and tonics that will warm your body from the inside out. No visit is complete without trying this local specialty.
