Yonaguni Island

At a glance

Located in between Ishigaki Island and Taiwan, Yonaguni Island is Japan's westernmost island where the last sunset can be seen. Being a remote island in the middle of the open ocean where waves can ride high, the island was once known by the name donan, which literally translates to ""hard to reach,"" as traveling to the island was a difficult challenge in the past. Incidentally, an Okinawan Awamori by the same name, donan, is also very famous.
Recently, the island gained newfound popularity thanks to the television drama Dr. Koto. Visitors to the island can enjoy marine sports such as marlin trolling as well as diving to see hammerhead sharks and other large sea creatures. Another one of the greatest sea attractions Yonaguni Island has to offer is its vast, extraordinary undersea ruins, which measure 100 meters long and 60 meters across.
Yonaguni Island is home to the protected horse species of Yonaguni uma, a Japanese-native breed of horse, offering visitors the one of a kind experience of horseback riding on the beach. To enjoy the island's undulating landscape of rolling hills, visitors are encouraged to rent a car or bicycle to get around. Enjoy the vibrant natural beauty and dynamic activities truly unique to Yonaguni Island.
