Irabu Island

At a glance

Irabu Island is located about 5 km northwest of Miyako Island and was formed by an upheaval of coral. Today, construction is moving forward on the 3,540-meter Irabu Ohashi Bridge, which will connect the two islands in 2015. Bonito fishing is a mainstay here which keeps the Port of Sarahama, the largest port in Miyako, bustling. There are also many excellent dive spots around the island, which have become a favorite of divers from all over.
The island is home to Sawadanohama, located on the northwest coast, which was voted as one of Japan's top 100 beaches in 1996, while the south side of the island features an endless strip of beautiful white sand beach called Toguchinohama. In contrast, the east side of the island features magnificent sheer cliffs with three observation points. Shimoji Island is connected to the island by six bridges, making coming and going quite easy.
Irabu Island is the second largest in the Miyako Islands next to Miyako Island and it has some hilly terrain, so a rental car or taxi hire is the best option for getting around. The number of rental cars on the island is limited, so one option would be to rent a car on Miyako Island and take the ferry over.
