Situated 300 km to the southwest of the main island of Okinawa, Miyako Island is the main island in the Miyako Islands that consist of eight islands. For the most part it is a flat island, with most of its population concentrated around the Port of Hirara. Other parts of the island are covered in expansive fields of sugar cane. Miyako Island is known for its active lifestyle as it hosts many sporting events like triathlons and music festivals.
Because of its size, visitors should rent a car or hire a taxi to get around the island. One of the island's highlights is the 7 km stretch of white sand beach known as Yonaha-maehama Beach, which is known widely as the most beautiful beach in Asia. Miyako Island is also famous for Yabiji, a huge coral reef known as the Phantom Continent, which provides spectacular snorkeling opportunities. The ocean around Miyako Island offers multiple hues of blue that overlap creating stunning seascapes like few others on the planet.
In addition to marine activities, Miyako Island also produces a huge number of vegetables and fruits, foremost of which is mango, which make choosing a gift of fresh food at the island's markets a fun endeavor. Miyako Island is also connected to nearby Ikema Island and Kurima Island by bridges, making the island the perfect base of operations for your local travel needs.
