Kitadaito Island

At a glance

The name Kitadaito Island was originally Ufuagari Island, which means island far to the east. This is because Kitadaito gets to see the sunrise first before any other part of Okinawa Prefecture. The island was formed atop a coral shelf and legend has it the island moved all the way from New Guinea. Kitadaito Island is surrounded by sheer rock cliffs, so when arriving by boat you will be lifted by crane to the port because there is no wharf to land on.
The island is covered in sugar cane fields, but it has assimilated a culture that is more similar to the Japanese mainland than Okinawa, making for a rather unique experience. The island's attractions include the fields partitioned off by stone walls, the cliffs rising from the ocean and the rather peculiar sight of cargo being hoisted up from the ferry to land by crane. Another interesting experience is swimming in the seawater pool dug out from a rock reef. The dark blue of the deep ocean right off shore is unlike any other of Okinawa's islands, dazzling the eyes like a precious stone. There are no maps on the island, just simple illustrated signboards here and there, which could provide a sense of adventure as you can search for spots using a GPS device. Or you could just ask the tourist information office.
You can get around the island using only a rental motorcycle or rental bicycle, but depending on your accommodation you can also rent a car.
The only way from the airport or seaport to the village is to be picked up by shuttle bus from your accommodation. Other modes of transportation can only be rented after you reach your accommodation. For lunch, one accommodation on the island has a restaurant or you can ask your accommodation to place an order with a box lunch shop in the morning. The other options are cup noodles from a vending machine or buying bread at the island's supermarket or shop.
Souvenirs include a host of cosmetic products for women made from shell ginger, including soaps and perfumes. These can be purchased mainly at the airport. You can also buy other local specialty processed foods made from potatoes or tuna from the supermarket or store. Visitors should definitely try the flavors of the island.
