Kume Island

At a glance

Located in the East China Sea some 100 km to the west of Naha City, Kume Island has flourished as a principle site of trade and exchange since ancient times. The island is known for the Kumejima firefly, which has been designated as a protected species, as well as its proactive approach to the environment, including activities that protect its beautiful waters and initiatives that conserve and cultivate coral. In addition, Kume Island's mountain stream and marsh area became a registered site under the Ramsar Convention in 2008. The island also hosts a number of annual sporting events, including hula performances, marathons and road races.
The island has many unique faces and feelings, as anglers normally gather at the Port of Kanegusu, while divers descend upon the area around Eefu Beach. In either case there is an abundance of sea life in the water, making Kume Island not only a popular destination for visitors, but also a relocation site for people from the main land of Japan.
The northern part of the island has many steep hills, so a rental car or hired taxi is the best means for getting around.
Mt. Uegusukudake is worth a trip as it offers sweeping panoramic views of the entire island. Take the advice of locals and travel around the island clockwise to take in the beautiful view of the ocean juxtaposed with the sheer rock cliffs as it unfolds in front of your eyes.
Kume Island's southeastern reaches contain Eefu Beach, voted as one of Japan's top 100 beaches, and Hatenohama, a 7-km stretch of pristine white sand located offshore and only visible during certain times of the day. These are must-see swimming destinations for any visitor.
The island's most famous local specialty item is Kumejima pongee, which is a highly regarded soft thin woven technique that has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Asset by the prefecture. Recently uses for Kumejima pongee have expanded beyond simple cloth to include Western apparel and handbags. Be on the lookout for the latest Kumejima pongee items while on the island. With all the things to see and do, visitors will no doubt enjoy their trip to Kume Island.
