Geruma Island

At a glance

Geruma Island is the smallest of the Kerama Islands and a part of Zamami Village. The island is connected with Aka Island by bridge and consists of a single village area. Most of the island is covered in dense forest, making it one of the most undisturbed islands in Okinawa. To the south the island is connected by the Geruma Bridge to Fukaji Island, which is an uninhabited island and site of an airport. Regular commercial flights were canceled in 2006 and now the airport is only served by charter flights. The island may not be known for its beaches or marine sports, but it does offer a laid back, rural setting where you can see the Geruma deer, which are designated as a protected species.
