Aka Island

At a glance

Aka Island comprises around 20 small and large islands situated about 40 km from Naha. The island, which is a part of Zamami Village, is the westernmost point in the Kerama Islands, which are known by divers around the world for their pristine waters and excellent diving opportunities. Frequent ferry service between the island and Zamami Island is offered, while bridges connect the island to Geruma Island and Fukaji Island in the south, making Aka Island a convenient place to set up your base of operations for the Kerama Islands. The island has a number of dive shops that will help you get the most out of your diving experience.
Aka Island is known as the island where the dog Shiro from the movie Shiro and Marilyn lived. In the movie, Shiro would swim across the channel to see Marilyn who lived on Zamami Island located directly across from Aka Island. Visitors can easily get around the island on foot or by bicycle, but a compact car may be the better choice for some of the more steep roads on the island.
