Iheya Island

At a glance

Iheya Island is also known as Terushino Island. The word terushino is an archaic word for the sun or the sun goddess. Located about 40 km north of the Motobu peninsula on the main island of Okinawa, Iheya Island is a narrow island that stretches north to south and is also the northernmost point in Okinawa Prefecture. The island is known for its sugar cane and rice cultivation, boasting the second largest production of the two crops next to the Yaeyama area of the prefecture.
A rental car or rental motorcycle is a perfect option when visiting Iheya Island because of the distances between tourist destinations. Taking a drive with the amazing views of the island’s mountain range rising to between 200 and 300 meters in elevation is another reason to rent a car or motorcycle to get around.
This peaceful island offers a ton of sites to see, including the Kumaya Cave at its northernmost tip, which has been designated as a Natural Monument by the prefectural government and is known from the Legend of Amano-Iwato, while its southernmost point features the beautiful white powder sands of Yonezaki Beach.
The Iheya Moonlight Marathon held every October is one of the most popular events on the island and it hosts a festival the night before the marathon. Iheya Island is connected to Noho Island in the south by the 680-meter long Noho Ohashi Bridge.
